| The town of Bagenalstown was built by Sir
Walter Bagenal to a classical plan in the 18th century and was originally
going to be called New Versailles. The Bagenal family home, Dunleckney Manor,
stands close to the town, on the old road to Carlow. It stands on the site
of the original 1585 house. The present 17th century building is very impressive
and is in the Tudor Gothic style with oriel windows. Near Bagenalstown are
the ruins of Ballymoon Castle (14th century)and Ballyloughan Castle (13th
century). Search the database for bed and breakfasts in Bagenalstown. |
