The town of Bagenalstown was built by Sir Walter Bagenal to a classical plan in the 18th century and was originally going to be called New Versailles. The Bagenal family home, Dunleckney Manor, stands close to the town, on the old road to Carlow. It stands on the site of the original 1585 house. The present 17th century building is very impressive and is in the Tudor Gothic style with oriel windows.
