| Carlingford is one of the most attractive villages found in County Louth. and is situated on the Cooley peninsula, which separates Carlingford Lough from Dundalk Bay, and enjoys a steady stream of visitors all-year-round. The village was a defensive bastion in the middle ages for the old English colonies in the Cooley and Carlingford areas, but it was as a trading site that the area was best known throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, profiting from war-related trade into Ulster via Carlingford Lough to Newry, a market that went into decline in the 18th century with the construction of the Newry Ship Canal. The town still retains it's medieval charm and is now listed as one of the Heritage towns of Ireland. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
